Cafe de Flore in Paris on San Germain is a great way to enjoy the cafe experience with really wonderful eggs, salads and onion soup. For those of you who read The Beautiful Fall, Flore served as the backdrop for the gatherings of Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent throughout their careers. Ironically, Lagerfeld is still a regular at this fashionable stop. I was thrilled to learn that next to the restaurant, you can find any of the "Cafe de Flore" white and green plates, tip trays or glasses for sale that they actually use in the restaurant. Each time I visit the restaurant, I wish I could take away a few pieces. So thrilled that I finally can. Definitely make it a stop on your next visit, and the best part is the eggs are for dinner.

One of the biggest complaints I hear about New York is that the hotel rates are outrageous and the rooms are small. I found a great downtown solution for those of you who love downtown New York and have an appreciation for Soho and the Lower East side. The Thompson LES, the sister to 60 Thompson, offers all of the amenities that make Thompson Hotels so great: modern aesthetic, good restaurant, fun bars and great service, but most importantly the rooms are larger than your average NYC hotel. I would recommend the King Superior room. The Thompson LES is situated just 3 blocks from Soho and sits on the North-West corner of the Lower East Side just below Houston. Rooms can be found under $300 during the week and under $400 for weekends. My father and brother tried it on their last visit and insisted on staying there again. Did I mention the great pool and Chang restaurant?

Victoria and Antonia Thompson are sisters, and they happen to live in the same building in two separate apartments with identical layouts. Each has her own individual sense of style, but you can see that both inherited a strength for aesthetics and interiors. I was blown away by the fact that many pieces in their apartments are refurbished antiques which were found in flea markets and on EBay--flawlessly. Antonia and Victoria are never afraid to paint, reupholster or refinish their rare, well-priced finds. Many of the paintings hanging on the walls of both Victoria and Antonia's homes were painted by their mother, Elizabeth Thompson. I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did.

I had to entertain my Dad and brother in New York this weekend. I tried my hardest to find some casual New York restaurants with amazing food and a relaxed atmosphere. All three of us walked away from DBGB's--Daniel Boulud's downtown Bowery restaurant--more than satisfied. The design of the restaurant is breathtakingly organized, and the food is incredible whether you are with the girls or with the guys for either brunch or dinner. You can't walk away without trying one of the 14 sausages listed on the menu, and I highly recommend the chorizo and eggs. The burger is fantastic, but don't leave without trying the sausage.

I died and went to heaven when I came across Darr on Atlantic in Brooklyn. It is filled with the best selection of random objects and antiques I have found in ages. I walked away with about 5 Virgin Marys, 3 bound "All My Thoughts & the Heart Talks" journals, a wire waste basket and a few beetles set in cubes of glass. Kim and her husband Dave (not pictured) have a knack for buying and renovating New York apartments. In the last 3 years, they have made some key changes to their Cobble Hill hill two-bedroom apartment. They have remodeled the kitchen, repainted the entire apartment (painting the natural wood crown molding white) and converted the powder room to a full-size bathroom. The 2nd floor brownstone apartment still includes the Pre War details such as 2 fireplaces and quaint architectural elements, but when you walk in, it feels new, pristine and refreshing. To the right of the living room is a dining area/office which can also serve as a guestroom. How could I forget the flower-pot-trimmed terrace which is manicured to perfection? I still can't get over that kitchen. Finally, as you can see in the photos, their two pugs--Smudge and Bella--reign full court at the West's home.

I came across the Swedish holiday home of architects Hans Murman and Ulla Alberts in the July 2009 issue of Elle Decoration UK. A photograph was taken of the local junipers, blown up and printed on a netting which was stretched over the steel structure of the house. When you look at the landscape the house is nearly invisible in its surroundings. It is basically like wallpapering the outside of a house. The inside of the house offers a feeling of calmness and serenity.

Among my favorite details are the embroidered pillows which rest in a gathering on the wood floors and the disposable camera which sits on Anderson's console table--just in case her guests happen to be inspired while visiting. A mix of floral and animal-printed upholstery conveys the designer's fabric strengths and love of subtle, delicate print contrasts. You walk away feeling as if you have visited a friend's apartment in Paris.

When you are in the mood for entrecote and potatoes, a wonderful mozzarella/melon/prosciutto salad (Salade Janou), and a huge self-serving of chocolate pudding, visit Chez Janou. Cozy in the winter and sidewalk filled in the summer, it is a memorable Parisian stop for a casual, local meal. Make a reservation because the wait can be quite long, but if you arrive on time with a reservation, you will be set. The restaurant is just a few steps away from Place des Vosges, so arrive a bit early and sit in the lovely park for a bit.

I recently attended a weekend of wedding events in France at Chateau du Bagnols, just outside of Lyon, France--http://www.chateaudebagnols.co.uk/. It was a wedding fit for a queen, and anyone who is interested in renting out an over-the-top chateau or is looking for a romantic weekend away (perfect honeymoon option) should visit the website. While the room rates are on the steep side, it is well worth the visit to the Chateau if you happen to be in the Lyon area. It is only a 2.5 hour train ride from Paris. If not, check out the website for fun. The grounds are incredible; the food is delicious, and the service is managed to perfection.

For a quick bite to eat while in Paris, stop by L'as du Fallafel in the Marais. You can only receive a real falafel if you stand in line and get it to go--highly recommended. Should you decide to sit inside one of the many crowded falafel restaurants on Rue du Rosiers, you will have to order a platter and make the pita yourself. Grab one to go, and I promise that you will go back every time you are in town for more. If the line is too long, step accross the street to Authenique Falafel; you have a lot of options amidst the 10+ falafel restaurants.

Mark Bittman of the New York Times describes the L'as du Fallafel experience perfectly:

"A good falafel sandwich is enough to make you a vegetarian, at least for one meal. That's my feeling, anyway, and at L'As du Fallafel — on Rue des Rosiers, in the heart of what was once Paris's most vibrant Jewish neighborhood — that feeling is compounded, because the falafel is so good that this is the one culinary destination in town I never skip. The sandwich contains the requisite super-crisp, garlicky chickpea fritters, with creamy hummus, lightly pickled red cabbage (something between slaw and kraut), salted cucumbers, fried eggplant and just-hot-enough harissa. This is all piled into a pita in such quantities that eating it is an adventure in napkin management. "

Graphic contrasts, printed wallpapers, and bright tiles create a memorable environment which is filled with texture and personality. Dennis Nourry and Nadia Murano restored this boutique hotel and wisely recruited fashion designer, Christian Lacroix for the decor. The 17-room corner hotel ranges in price from 190 to 350 Euros. One of the best ways to spend $10 in New York is at the Upright Citizens Brigade improv theater in Chelsea, New York. These hour and a half improv shows are highly entertaining, hilarious and really casual--you can even enjoy a beer while watching. Basically, next time you have to entertain a guest, go on a date or just get out of the house, call ahead and reserve the number of tickets you need for any of their shows 7 days a week. Don't be scared by the names of the imrov groups, just reserve the time you think works best for you, and enjoy the show. It is imrov; so you can't go too wrong. If you are interested in taking improv classes, the theater also offers daily workshops. Did I mention that this theater was started by Amy Poehler and her improv group, the Upright Citizens Brigade? She does still make appearances, so keep your fingers crossed. The most popular show of the week is Asscat 3000 on Sunday nights--reserve early!

David shares this multi-level space in one of the new high rises on the Manhattan side of Williamsburg with a few friends. Love: Anayvelyse, Street Poet/Student

I was speechless today when I came across Anayvelyse, a student and poet, who has set up shop with her typewriter, a cardboard sign stating "Poem Shop; $2 Donation" and a magnitude of talent. She really offers something I personally haven't experienced in New York. I first stopped to ask if I could take her photo for my Faces series, and I was taken back by her gorgeous eyes and innocent voice. She said, "Yes, you may...would you like a poem?" Two poems later, I was blown away by her talent and the entire experience. You give her a topic and she writes. Within five minutes, she will recite the poem she has created, in front of your eyes, just for you, in an incredible voice made for reading poetry. What wonderful gifts. If you see her, make yourself stop. You will leave with a great memory, a gift/keepsake, and a taste of Bohemia. Anayvelyse normally works on 13th and University, but you may also find her on the corner of 3rd Avenue and St. Marks in front of the Starbucks. Above you will find the poems Anayvelyse wrote for me on Music and Film. Why not have a poem written for someone else about something they love...stick it in a frame, and you are done.

Natalie, a Belgian interior designer, and her husband have meticulously arranged their East Village apartment to perfection. You are immediately impressed upon entering the apartment, by the striking navy wall which grounds the entire space. Three bold profile drawings, mounted on cardboard, were purchased by Nathalie with her entire savings during her teenage years. What a wise investment. Just around the corner, you come across the bold, palm wallpapered bedroom wall which most importantly was self-installed. Among my other favorites in the apartment are the hundreds of Cd's which sit above the kitchen cabinets, a wax head designed by Nathalie's accessory-designer brother and a collection of whale and dolphin bones. Each and every piece in this apartment has been carefully selected and each piece has a story behind it.

When in Paris last, I purchased the series of 15 photographs, printed on 3x5 inch linen paper from the street artist in the first image above. This photographer can be found selling his photographs on the corner of Rue du Bourgeois in the Marias 6 months out of the year. The rest of the year he is traveling through India, using the money from his street sales, taking more photographs. I was impressed with the success of his street sales, and I was enamored by the culture and emotion captured in these prints. Which one is your favorite?

Photographer Laura Skayhan's childhood home serves as the backdrop of many of her unique photographs and portraits. On a recent trip to Baltimore, I had the opportunity to photograph her family home which is filled with incredible floral wallpaper prints and chandeliers. I am a huge fan of florals in general, and the Skayhan home serves as a perfect backdrop for not only photos, but an elegant everyday life. Ironically, I have a photo of Laura's mother hanging above my bed in the striped hallway. It was so nice to visit the site in person.

My first visit to Soho/Chinatown's Pearl River Mart was a photo extravaganza. The two-story Asian market is filled with incredible ceramic tableware, tea pots, paper lanterns, floral fabrics and wood bird cages. I was so excited to find white and black lucky Japanese cats downstairs which bring protection and wealth those they attract. Buddhas in all shapes and sizes can also be found at Pearl River Mart. Hanging from the ceilings are incredible wood bird cages which could be used in the home or on the patio. Loads of incredible blue and white ceramic bowls and plates range from $8-$20. I walked out with a printed mouse pad, pictured above, as my Pearl River souvenir. Next to the main entrance on Broadway, you will find a second door which leads up upstairs to a second furniture store. This is where I found the colored glass/metal lanterns pictured above which are only $30.

Barrio Chino is hands down the best Mexican food in New York. The Broome Street chic, hole-in-the-wall is a haven for fresh grapefruit, jalepeno and strawberry margaritas. Whether you are having the nopales salad (pictured above), the enchiladas verdes (the best in your life) or the sopa Azteca (a hangover cure), you will not be disappointed. I started coming to Barrio Chino about four years ago, and since then its popularity has grown significantly. After 8 pm, things start to get crowded, and you may need to grab a drink down the street after leaving your name on the list. Don't only think of this as a dinner spot, but also a wonderful brunch when you are craving eggs with chorizo and fresh melon, orange or grapefruit juice. One large, raised farm table is ideal for your next 10 person dinner. They do take reservations for this center-room table. Don't forget to start with chips and guacamole; you will not be disappointed.

You wouldn't guess by the high ceilings, chandeliers, crown molding and pink paint that three boys live in this lovely St. Marks apartment. Geoff, Chris and Kristian moved in two years ago--only Geoff is pictured above. When I first visited this giant three bedroom apartment which takes up an entire floor, I assumed that the boys moved into the apartment with pink walls. While shooting, I learned that they opted for the lovely powder pink hue themselves, and they even personally installed and hand-finished one of the chandeliers. The apartment definitely has its boy stamp--bicycles, a stuffed moose head and plastic wrestlers--many of which were gifts left behind by their owners during the $10 Christmas gift exchange. The guys even grow basil on the windowsill for home made meals. The pink walls offer a wonderful contrast to the masculine inhabitants, and the best part is that everything has a story. Even the player piano was trucked in by Geoff from Yonkers (it was free). The 1,000 pound instrument barely made it up the single flight of stairs.

After flying back from Paris, I was very ready to get home to my apartment in Manhattan as soon as possible. When I opened the door to my taxi at Newark airport, I was quite surprised to find the Interior Decorated Taxi. While I had to chuckle, I think it is important to appreciate how much effort this driver put into his vehicle. I definitely let him know that I hadn't ever seen anything like it!

Hotel Griffou, owned by Larry Poston of Waverly Inn and Jony Swet of Balthazar, is not only a charming, neighborhood space for those who live in the Village or near Union Square, but it is an incredible meal. I highly recommend the Steak Diana, which is a thinly sliced fillet mignon with sides of mashed potatoes and green beans. Giant asparagus make a perfect, healthy appetizer for this entree. It was honestly the best steak I have had in New York, no exaggeration. I will be back soon for a redo. The space consists of a handful of cavernous rooms, lit with a rose tint and vintage wallpaper. It is cozy and comfortable.

I thought I'd share some of my favorite photos of Michael Jackson with you this week. His Michel Jackson Number Ones is often playing on my ipod and in my home. It is always a great go to when entertaining or just hanging around. They are all hits; you can't go wrong. I am taking in all of my favorite Michael Jackson moments this week. There are two You Tube videos that are definitely worth watching. One is entitled Michale Jackson Dancing in a Car and the other is Michael beat-boxing and singing in Oprah's 1993 interview --see clip 6/8. I have listed them below. Clignancourt is an incredible flea market in Paris. This maze of concrete alley ways is a scavenger hunt of a dream for anyone who enjoys vintage china, antique furniture and perfect junk--if there is such a thing. I have included some of my favorite images, store owners and purchases from this trip. Your biggest challenge after making this stop will be how much you can fit in your suitcase. I could fit an antique Virgin Mary, a vintage ash tray from the French restaurant the Drouant, a Limoges tray and a line drawing on brown paper in mine. One more tip, you can definitely bargain a bit without feeling pushy.

Paris: Merci

Merci is a new concept store in Paris' Marais. The three floor, modern space--at 111 Boulevard Beaumarchais--is filled with incredible clothing, furniture and accessories. I have included some of my favorite highlights. This is a must for anyone traveling to Paris in the near future. I have only featured images from the home department, but the clothing floor is amazing as well.

Here are just a few fun photos from Paris during the day. I am always intrigued by Paris' bike culture, side walk cafes and street art. I purchased a series of photos from the street vendor below. I will scan them next week for a post. They are incredible. Above you will see a typical, traditional French Chateau in the Marais with a field of red and green lights planted in the grass. The contrast between the contemporary light display and the building's architecture was very impactful. Finally, the cafe on the street is a must stop for dinner in the 5th, Le Coupe Chou. The food is as wonderful as the scenery and sidewalk music surrounding it.

We are working from this incredible apartment on Place de Vosges in Paris' Marais this week. The courtyard surrounded, three-bedroom apartment is striking, charming and one of a kind. As you ascend up the stone, open-air stairwell, you have no idea what to expect. The entry way immediately takes your breath away, and that is only the beginning. This is the most charming apartment you have ever seen. Hanging from the hand-painted 17th Century beamed ceilings in each room are antique chandeliers. Between the two main living rooms rests a book case, framed by chandelier pedestals which sit rather than hang. The master, canopy bedroom stands in stark contrast to the two upstairs masculine bedrooms--each charming in its own way. You can only capture 1/100th of the apartment's charm in the photographs. I am ready to move in.

If you want inexpensive antiques and home accessories, stop by Yesterday's News in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn on the lovely Court Street. It is less expensive than the flea market, literally. It is jam packed with a wide range of antiques from stamps, to teapots and even human body forms. Outside on the sidewalk you will come across a furniture sidewalk sale which includes bookshelves, stools and even magazine racks.

Open for a year and a half, Georgia Tapert Living--located at 456 Broome Street, between Mercer and Green--is a perfect place to stop for well-priced home accessories and gifts. She has a nice mix of antiques and new, chic gifts for yourself or a friend. Drawings and photographs, all of which are for sale, cover the walls and would look great in spaces outside of her store. The best part is that most items are under $100. Chic and affordable are the two best words to describe this Soho treasure.

Bookshelves can made a stark room look cozy and comfortable, and they can also serve as room dividers. I love the image above, which came from Elle Decor's So Chic. Ikea offers one of the best bookshelves for an affordable price which also serves as an incredible room divider for your New York studios and lofts. The Expedit bookshelf comes in three different colors--black, natural and white. I really prefer the white. They are large enough to cover an entire wall and/or properly divide a space. I still can't believe it is under $200.

Party: Poiret King of Fashion

In 2007 the Metropolitan Museum of Art featured Paul Poiret's contributions to fashion in their Costume Institute exhibit. I have saved this photo for two years now. I think it would be so much fun to use this theme as inspiration for a dinner party or wedding. Prints could be used as table cloths with bamboo chairs, and the colors and prints can follow your personal taste. They can be as crazy or subtle as you please. I will always refer back to this when brainstorming for ideas when entertaining. Maybe you will too.
